Upper Qeparo Awakes for the Olive Harvest While the Beach Below Sleeps

While the beach below hibernates in November, Upper Qeparo comes alive as locals harvest centuries-old olive groves in mild autumn weather.

While lower Qeparo and the nearby beaches of Porto Palermo completely shut down for the winter in November, the historic village above offers a vibrant, authentic glimpse into seasonal life. Perched high on the slopes of Mount Gjivlash, Upper Qeparo (Qeparo i Sipërm) remains an active stone settlement where November marks the height of the traditional olive harvest.

Across the terraced hillsides, centuries-old groves buzz with activity as locals spread wide nets to gather the seasonal crop and run village olive presses. Visiting now reveals a working agricultural rhythm impossible to see during the summer high season. With daytime coastal temperatures hovering around a comfortable 15°C to 18°C, the steep cobblestone alleys become ideal for walking without the intense heat of July or August, completely free of tourist crowds and set against quiet views of the Ionian Sea.

Reaching the hilltop takes roughly 10 minutes along a narrow, winding asphalt road leading up from the SH8 coastal highway. Because beachside cafes and seasonal restaurants lower down are shuttered for the off-season, travelers should plan to stop at Upper Qeparo’s small, everyday village tavernas and cafes or look toward nearby Himarë for more extensive services and accommodation.
